Bird View Trail

Extension

What’s Happening

The Village and Town of Egg Harbor are taking an important step toward expanding safe, walkable access with the Bird View Trail Extension—a six-foot-wide walking path that would connect Brooks Farm neighborhood, Landmark Resort, and Carrington Restaurant to the beach and downtown Egg Harbor. Right now, all of these destinations can only be reached by car, even though they’re less than a mile apart.

This project builds on the community-supported National Park Service trail planning study, which brought together municipalities, organizations, and residents to identify high-priority trail routes in the region. The Bird View Trail Extension was one of those recommended routes.

This project would extend the existing Bird View Trail, which currently connects the village center to Egg Harbor Beach, and ultimately serve as the first segment of a longer trail corridor connecting to Highway 42 and destinations beyond. The current effort is focused on securing funding for the engineering phase, which includes design, permitting, and public engagement.

Who's Involved

This project is supported and guided by:

  • Door County Trails

  • Village of Egg Harbor

  • Town of Egg Harbor

  • National Park Service (initial study and public engagement)

Why It Matters

This trail is more than a path—it’s a strategic investment in safety, health, environmental stewardship, and quality of life.

  • Smart Alternative to Driving: During the tourist season, it’s estimated that over 300 vehicles per day—used by residents, resort guests, and visitors—access the beach and village center from neighborhoods along this proposed trail. A safe trail gives many the choice to leave the car behind.

  • Village Benefits: Fewer cars on the road mean more parking availability at Egg Harbor Beach and downtown, quieter streets, and lower vehicle emissions—all contributing to a more welcoming, walkable village center.

  • A Safer Option for Workers: Many seasonal and hospitality workers—often young, without vehicles, and wearing dark-colored uniforms—currently walk or bike along this roadway, frequently at night. This dedicated trail offers a far safer alternative.

  • Environmental Sustainability: Walking produces zero emissions and minimizes wear on infrastructure, helping preserve scenic roads and natural landscapes. In this case, the trail follows a section of the Niagara Escarpment, a globally significant geological feature.

  • Community Support: The project reflects broad community input—including residents, business owners, workers, and students—collected through the National Park Service’s inclusive engagement process.

The Bird View Trail Extension isn’t just a local path—it’s a model for how thoughtful trail development can address real transportation, environmental, and quality-of-life issues in Door County.

Where Things Stand

The current focus is securing funding for engineering and design. This includes:

  • Trail alignment and layout

  • Permitting and environmental review

  • Continued public outreach and community engagement

  • Construction-ready planning documents

Once engineering is complete, the next phase will be securing funding for construction. The Bird View Trail Extension is shovel-ready in concept, supported by prior planning, and positioned to spur future connections throughout the area and beyond.
