Planning Community Connections

Strategic Master Plan

What’s Happening

Door County Trails is launching a Strategic Master Plan to guide the future of bicycle and pedestrian trail development across the peninsula. This plan will create a unified, county-wide vision that connects people, communities, and places.

This forward-looking Strategic Master Plan will:

  • Assess the current trail system across Door County

  • Identify opportunities to close key gaps and connect existing trails

  • Engage full-time and seasonal residents, business owners, and other stakeholders

  • Prioritize future trail corridors that link communities

  • Develop a long-range strategy and mapping for a connected trail network

Rather than reinventing what’s already been built, this plan will elevate and integrate existing assets to create a safe, accessible network that serves both everyday needs and recreational opportunities—for our Door County community.

Once funded, the planning process will begin with stakeholder meetings, a public open house, and a county-wide survey to gather community input.

Who's Involved

This project will be developed collaboratively with:

  • Door County Trails

  • Door County Officials

  • Municipal officials from towns and villages throughout the county

  • Community members, residents, seasonal homeowners, and stakeholders

  • Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources

  • Wisconsin Department of Transportation

Why It Matters

A county-wide Strategic Master Plan is essential to ensure that future trail development in Door County is smart, connected, and community-driven. Without a shared plan, trail efforts risk becoming fragmented, missing key opportunities to link towns, villages, parks, and population centers.

The Strategic Master Plan will:

  • Provide a clear, long-term vision to guide decision-making and investment

  • Coordinate efforts across municipalities to maximize resources and impact

  • Identify and prioritize critical connections in the county’s trail network

  • Unify existing trail segments into a more cohesive, navigable system

  • Strengthen funding proposals by aligning with a comprehensive, data-backed strategy

  • Ensure that trail development reflects local values, input, and needs

This plan lays the groundwork for a truly connected Door County—by design, not by chance.

Where Things Stand

We are currently seeking funding to initiate the planning process. Once secured, the project will include:

  • A kickoff meeting with Door County Trails and partners

  • A review of all existing trail plans and networks

  • A public engagement process, including a county-wide survey and open house

  • Development of a strategy document and trail network maps

The final product will guide future trail development and investment across Door County.
